This is what I have been able to piece together of the history and fate of Studio Software Corporation, from legal filings, news articles, and the contents in my possession. Some dates are approximate or best educated guesses, but the order should be correct.

  1. 1978-05-16 [1]: California Coastal Service founded
  2. 1982-02-18 [4]: Earliest surviving dated disk (Speed/Art demo, actual contents from 1983; written using BASIC)
  3. 1982-07-22 [1]: CCS renamed to Creative Freedom Software
  4. 1983-02-02 [1]: Only surviving Speed/Art demo
  5. 1983-??-?? [5]: Speed/Art rebranded to "DO-IT"? (Unclear if this happened, but it seems plausible; see story for details)
  6. 1983-08-18 [1]: CFS issues more shares
  7. 1983-10-12 [1]: CFS renamed to Studio Software Corporation
  8. 1983-12-13 [5]: Development starts on DO-IT (using Pascal)
  9. 1984-05-03 [1]: SSC renamed to Old Studio Software Corporation
  10. 1984-05-03 [1]: Studio Software Corporation founded
  11. 1984-10-03 [1]: OSSC merged into SSC
  12. 1984-11-27 [1]: Studio Software Development Inc. founded
  13. 1984-12-12 [4]: DO-IT Beta 1.2 (No dates on any other betas, but I believe this to be the final one before 1.0)
  14. 1985-??-?? [5]: DO-IT 1.0 (Nothing gives a date for this, but based on source code dates I believe it to be Feburary)
  15. 1985-04-?? [4]: DO-IT 1.01A
  16. 1985-06-10 [4]: DO-IT 1.02
  17. 1985-09-?? [4]: DO-IT 1.03
  18. 198?-??-?? [4]: DO-IT 1.04 (Only one 1.04 disk survived, with no date on it)
  19. 1986-02-?? [4]: DO-IT 1.10 (May also be known as "XTRA", see story for details)
  20. 1986-07-08 [6a]: FrontPage launch formally announced.
  21. 1986-08-?? [4]: Intended launch of FrontPage 1.0, with GSS-CGI; did not happen
  22. 1986-09-?? [4]: FrontPage 1.0, with GSX
  23. 1986-09-09 [1]: SSDI merged into SSC
  24. 1986-09-09 [1]: SSC announces/files IPO
  25. 1986-10-?? [6b]: SSC IPO becomes available for purchase
  26. 1986-11-?? [4]: FrontPage 1.1
  27. 1986-11-?? [6c]: SSC's IPO withdrawn
  28. 1987-01-?? [2]: New chairman and CEO hired externally
  29. 1987-01-23 [4]: Last surviving dated disk(s), source backup of "FrontPage 2.2" (likely never released, nearly identical to 2.1)
  30. 1987-03-16 [3]: SSC closes
  31. 1988-02-01 [1]: SSC formally suspended
