The purpose of the diagnostic software is to test the integrity of
the components of your computer system. In addition, the diagnostic
software is used to tell the system about various devices that are
 installed on your system.
 The functions of the diagnostic software vary from system to system;
furthermore, the device on which the diagnostic software resides is
also different from system to system. On smaller systems it is often
 on the diagnostics disk.
on the diagnostics disk. On larger systems it may reside on its
own partition of the system disk (like /diag).
The functions often performed by the diagnostic software may include:
             1. - System hardware checkout
             2. - System parameter setup
             3. - System hardware configuration
             4. - Preparing the system for moving
             5. - Formatting floppy disks
             6. - Copying tapes and/or cartridges
In general, the use of these diagnostics procedures is very
straightforward, especially if you read your system Owner's
Manual or a Guide to Operations. The diagnostic software, if
you know how to use it, will often save you a tremendous amount
of time and money when you run into system hardware problems!
If your diagnostic software is on a floppy, then you can probably
boot your system from the diagnostic disk, which will provide
you with a diagnostic menu similar to the one shown above.
You would have a similar diagnostic menu if you have your
diagnostic software on your hard disk.
Assuming you have the menu above
 with a prompt, please select
 choice 1 for system checkout!
 Enter the action desired.

At this point, you would usually get
 another prompt for system checkout,
and you'd make the desired choice.
This may not be exactly like your
 system, but your diagnostics
 probably have similar options.
