The original UNIX development and major UNIX updates were done
at Bell Laboratories. The first version of UNIX to be publicly
 released was Version 6, V6, in 1975.

After the release of Version 6, work began on developing
UNIX programming tools, the product referred to as
 The Programmer's Workbench or PWB.

Shortly after the release of UNIX V7, a major effort in UNIX
development was undertaken at the University of California at
Berkeley. Almost simultaneously, work on the V32 update of
Version 7 was being done at Bell Labs.

In 1979, the Berkeley System Distribution (4.1 BSD) was released.
This release was superior to Version 7 in file handling, record
locking, virtual memory usage, and included several new Berkeley
 utilities.
